You need JavaScript enabled to view it Phone: 01566 773406 It was in 1948 that the aim of Spencer Toy, The Headmaster of Launceston College was realised……Launceston RFC was founded by Spencer Toy, Gordon Reeve, Eric Smith and Arthur Venning after an inaugural meeting was held in the Guildhall on Friday 15th October 1948. With the use of a college pitch, rugby ball and changing facilities in exchange for a cwt of coke to heat the water for the showers, LRFC started out.By Spring 1949 LRFC had its own ground at Hurdon (now David S Smith, the Club’s main Sponsor) rented from the Town Council. Donations were made of scaffolding poles for posts and an ex-army hut for changing rooms, complete with a bath built out of concrete blocks by players. LRFC’s new ground was opened by the Mayor of Launceston in time for the County Trial in September 1949. Another ‘find’ of a second army hut which was laying ‘next door’ was picked up and carried by players the ½ mile to Hurdon: this enabled LRFC to store their lawnmower and for the ‘Ladies’ to have somewhere to make the teas.Later the ground at Hurdon was sold and the Club moved to a pitch at Pennygillam. The ground at Polson was purchased in the summer of 1969, with matches being temporarily played at South Petherwin in a field loaned by the late John Wills. By Spring 1970, LRFC had moved to Polson, using John Perry’s cowshed for the changing rooms until the new Clubhouse was built. Over the next decade, the Clubhouse grew with extensions and further pitches added; this meant that further changing rooms had to be added to cope with the additional players! Floodlights were set up in the 1980’s.On September 3rd 1996 LRFC officially opened the newly extended Clubhouse.LRFC currently has 3 full sized pitches, which are used extensively by, the 1st team, the Academy, Castles, Colts, Minis and Juniors.Further intensive groundwork was completed in 2007 (ready for the anticipated increase of spectators due to promotion to National Division 1), of standing covered terraces, enabling fans to enjoy the game, regardless of the weather.A further 2-storey building was added, The Lanson Suite, enabling match day corporate hospitality. This facility also provides a rentable venue ideal for business meeting, seminars, and entertainment space.
